Cricket result margins: runs versus wickets
A win by runs and a win by wickets describe different match situations. Read the result line with the innings order.
Winning while defending
When a side successfully defends its total in a normal completed chase, the result can be expressed as a margin in runs. For example, “won by 12 runs” describes the score difference relevant to that result, not twelve overs remaining.

Winning while chasing
A side that reaches its target can win by wickets, reflecting batting wickets still available. An illustrative “won by 6 wickets” is not a six-run margin. The target may have been reached with different numbers of balls remaining.
Use the official wording
Ties, revised targets or other conditions can change the result description. Do not infer the complete result from two visible totals when the match involved special circumstances. Read the official final status.
